| The Messerschmitt 109 was designed by the BFW (Bayerische
Flugzeugwerke) company. Therefore the type was designated Bf-109. In
1936 the company was reformed in Messerschmitt GmbH and the prefix Me
was assigned to aircraft of the company. Although the 109 was officially
never renamed in Me-109, the names Bf-109 and Me-109 were both used
during the was in Germany in official documents.
On this site I have chosen to use Me-109 consistently and not use the name Bf-109.
