History

The first Me-109 arrived in the Soviet Union in February 1938. This was an aircraft captured in Spain by the Republican forces.

After the German-Soviet non-aggression pact was signed the Soviets went "shopping" in Germany for modern military hardware. As a result of this five Me-109E were delivered in 1940.

During the war several 109's were captured and test flown by the Soviets.

There is also mention of a number of 109's and FW-190's flown by defected German pilots fighting along the Soviets. These aircraft were reported carrying red Balkenkreuze on the wings and red stars on the fuselage.
